And for those who say the Warriors faced an easy road to the title, their strength of schedule — as measured by the average regular-season SRS of the teams they faced in the playoffs, with an adjustment for each game’s location — was the 34th most difficult among the 71 NBA champions since 1947, coming in as slightly tougher than the average title run. It wasn’t the hardest path, but it wasn’t a cakewalk either. Here’s one more area where Golden State is probably the greatest ever: pure talent. Even on paper, before they ever played a game, the newly minted Kevin Durant Warriors seemed to have the greatest roster in NBA history. And unlike other recent “superteams” — such as the 2011 Miami Heat or 2015 Cavs — they basically lived up to their preseason billing. Our back-of-the-envelope calculations (using projected Box Plus/Minus) called for Golden State’s regular-season scoring margin per 100 possessions to be +12.3; they ended the season at +11.6, diminishing marginal returns be damned. That might seem to bolster the argument that the Warriors had it easy. With so much talent, they set themselves up for smooth sailing before they even embarked — just roll out the ball and set ’em loose. But in conjunction with the fact that the NBA’s overall talent pool is the best it’s been in at least two decades, it also supports the argument that Golden State played the game at the highest level it’s ever been played. In an era of great players, the Warriors had more of them than anyone else — and they all played to their potential. The specter of the Michael Jordan-era Bulls will always hang over every GOAT conversation, of course — as well they should. And according to the numbers above, the ’71 Bucks and ’01 Lakers (among others) should be right alongside Chicago in that conversation. But with their closing statement Monday night, the 2017 Warriors finished making their case. From now on, any discussion of the NBA’s best-ever teams has to put Golden State at (or at least near) the top of the list.VIDEO: Are the Warriors the best NBA team ever? 312012San Antonio 2015 NBA season was The Year Of The Golden State Warriors. But then, so was 2016 — up until its final moments. Somehow, though, the 2017 version has managed to overshadow anything its forerunners had accomplished. Closing out a five-game Finals victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday night, these Warriors put the finishing touches on a season that ranks among the greatest in basketball history. According to at least one metric, this team made a strong case that it should be considered the greatest of all time — but there’s still room for debate.Going into the Finals, I noted that Golden State was closing in on the 1996 Chicago Bulls’ NBA record for the greatest peak performance ever, according to FiveThirtyEight’s Elo ratings (which measure a team’s strength over time). The Warriors blew past the Bulls’ old rating this season with their 113-91 romp over the Cavs in Game 1, then set a new high-water mark in each of the next two games. Although the Warriors’ Game 4 loss dropped them back below the Bulls’ maximum Elo, Golden State finished the season with a rating of 1846, 23 points higher than the ’96 Bulls’ final mark. (Like this year’s Warriors, those Bulls also jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the Finals, but Chicago lost both Games 4 and 5 to the Sonics, which dropped their end-of-season Elo below what it was at its peak.)Using our preferred ranking method of blending together a team’s peak Elo, average daily Elo during the season and its final, end-of-season Elo, the 2017 Warriors come in as the greatest team in the first to admit that the metric has its share of blind spots. And the Warriors don’t quite make it to No. 1 in a few other statistical categories. For instance, according to Basketball-Reference.com’s Simple Rating System (SRS) metric, which adjusts a team’s point differential for the strength of schedule it faced, Golden State’s entire season — including the playoffs — ranks “only” third all time, trailing the 1970-71 Milwaukee Bucks in addition to the ’96 Bulls.Part of that is due to the Warriors’ fourth-place ranking in regular-season SRS. But Golden State also blew a chance to move up the list with their playoff run. Had they completed the elusive Fo’, Fo’, Fo’, Fo’ with a Finals sweep, they would have compiled the best single-postseason SRS of any champion ever. But Golden State lost by 21 in Game 4 against Cleveland, so instead they finished with the second-best playoff performance of any NBA champ ever, behind the 2001 L.A. The next best? On the women’s circuit, it’s Caroline Wozniacki, the 27-year-old from Denmark who’s now ranked second in the world.Of all the women in tennis, no non-Slam champ has been as good as Wozniacki, who played in her first Grand Slam final in 2009 and is now in the Australian Open semifinals. She has a 541-223 record, according to the WTA, which gives her a winning percentage of 71 percent. If any Slam-less active players compare to Wozniacki, it’s Simona Halep and Agnieszka Radwanska, whose highest career rankings were No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, and who each played in at least one Grand Slam final. But Wozniacki’s overall accomplishments are more impressive, as she’s won more WTA singles titles and put up a better overall win percentage. There have only been a handful of female players in the Open era of tennis history to win as much as Wozniacki has without lifting a Slam trophy. To measure this, we looked at the net wins (wins minus losses) of all players since 1968 through last year’s U.S. Open, and then found the point in their careers where they had the most net wins but zero Grand Slams. Only Pam Shriver, Helena Sukova and Zina Garrison — all of whom played primarily in the 1980s — reached a higher mark than Wozniacki. While Sukova’s career may be the most disappointing — she lost two Australian Open finals and two U.S. Open finals — Wozniacki has won more titles than any other player on this list. Through 2017 U.S. Open. Main draws only.*Peak set during a Grand Slam tournament the player ultimately won.Sources: Tennis Abstract, WTA Wozniacki may yet win a Slam, earning her way off this list much like the late Jana Novotna did. The Czech player had peak net wins of +298 before she finally broke through at Wimbledon in 1998 and won her first singles Slam at age 29. She would retire the following year. More recently, Kim Clijsters was at +239 net wins when she finally won a Slam at the 2005 U.S. Open — her fifth finals appearance.Wozniacki can perform at her best just about anywhere. The most difficult surface for her has been grass, but she still managed to reach the fourth round of Wimbledon six times in her career, including last year. At the French Open, she twice reached the quarterfinals. Her present run to the Australian Open semifinals ties her best there. The most competitive Wozniacki of all showed up at the U.S. Open, where she lost two finals, one to Clijsters and the other to Serena Williams, who has won 23 Grand Slam singles titles in her career.Wozniacki’s Grand Slam drought seems unlikely, especially when she’s compared to her rivals. Others with thinner resumes already have won Slams. Take Garbiñe Muguruza, who has won two Grand Slam titles but has a lower winning percentage than Wozniacki. The same can be said of Petra Kvitova, who won twice at Wimbledon. Perhaps most improbable of all: Jelena Ostapenko, who won her first Grand Slam title at last year’s French Open. She was 20 years old at the time and had never made it past the third round at a major before winning the title. So why hasn’t Wozniacki won? She is hardly a choker. The main reason, it seems, is that her tennis is oriented more around defense — sprinting and hitting medium-pace shots — than offense. But in tennis, defensive players can get into trouble when they run into someone with a hot offensive game — which is nearly impossible to beat. Take Serena Williams, who has a better, and more consistent, offense than anyone in the game. Wozniacki has played Williams 11 times and lost 10 matches, including two at the U.S. Open (a semifinal and a final). Wozniacki has lost to Venus Williams seven times and beaten her only once.At the Australian Open, Wozniacki has her best chance yet to end her Grand Slam title drought. She’s already managed one miracle. In the second round, she beat the unseeded Croatian Jana Fett, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5. Wozniacki trailed 5-1 in the third set and faced two match points before winning six straight games. “I felt like I was one foot out of the tournament,” Wozniacki said.If Wozniacki reaches the final, she’ll be playing against Angelique Kerber or Halep. Over her career, she’s 5-8 against Kerber and 4-2 against Halep. Either opponent would set up a classic match, giving her an excellent chance to go from runner-up to champion. And whether she wins or loses here, there is a record that Wozniacki is very likely to break soon. If she takes over the No. 1 ranking, the gap between the last time she was the WTA’s top-ranked player and this time would be the longest stretch since the rankings were introduced in 1975. It’s not worth a Grand Slam title, but it’s not bad, either. read more

OSU senior center Jacoby Boren (50) blocks during a game against Illinois on Nov. 14 at Memorial Stadium in Champaign, Illinois. OSU won 28-3. Credit: Samantha Hollingshead | Photo EditorAll things considered, Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer was relatively pleased with his team’s 28-3 victory over Illinois on Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Champaign, Illinois. His starting quarterback, redshirt sophomore J.T. Barrett, was back in the lineup after a one-game suspension. His star running back, junior Ezekiel Elliott, continued his Heisman-worthy season and moved into third place in school history for career rushing yards. And on the other side of the ball, his defense smothered the Fighting Illini, allowing just three points.Despite all of the aforementioned accomplishments, Meyer said he wanted to see his team be a little more balanced, and he knows how that will occur.“That starts right now with pass protection,” he said on Saturday, following the win. “That’s the only negative.”Meyer said in the upcoming week, the Buckeyes are going to work “extremely hard” to fix the issues in pass protection, especially because they need to protect Barrett in the pocket, which didn’t happen enough against Illinois. As a result, the passing game was not nearly as dynamic as it had been in the past.“I wouldn’t call it exceptional, because I think he got pressured a little bit,” Meyer said of Barrett’s performance.Barrett only threw for a 150 yards and one touchdown, with an interception. The interception, however, is a perfect example of why the cracks in the pass protection need to be sealed before the Michigan State Spartans arrive in Columbus on Saturday. With the third quarter nearing an end, OSU was in the midst of an eight-play, 51 yard drive well into Illini territory. On second down, Barrett dropped back to pass, but the pocket quickly crumbled. As the redshirt sophomore tried to find redshirt senior Nick Vannett across the middle, his elbow was hit, which caused the ball to look more like a floating feather than an actual throw. It landed right in the arms of junior safety and Hilliard, Ohio, native Caleb Day, who returned it 19 yards. The pressure was applied by junior Carroll Phillips, who was supposed to be blocked on the play by redshirt sophomore left guard Billy Price.“I went to pull, and he came faster than what I was ready for,” Price said describing the play. “I took a step back to regain my balance to able to take him out, and by that time, I was already in J.T.’s lap.”Price credited Carroll with making the play, but while talking about the sequence, he was visibly disappointed with himself in allowing the deflection to happen. One area where Price is not disappointed, however, is in run blocking, evidenced by how the offensive line routinely clears gaping holes for Elliott to run through. The St. Louis native turned in his 15th consecutive game of over 100 yards rushing on Saturday by tallying 181 yards with two touchdowns.“Us, as the offensive line, we really do enjoy blocking for (Elliott),” Price said. “That’s what we love to do.”But, to find the balance of creating running lanes fit for a semitrailer truck to drive through and a sturdy pocket for Barrett to pass behind will not happen overnight, according to Price.Fixing pass protection, Price said, is extremely difficult because it is hard to highlight one thing as the definitive issue.“It’s something you just have to continue to improve,” he said. “It’s a craft. It’s not just something like run blocking where you can just go slug somebody. It’s an artform.”But, this week and beyond, Price said the O-line will work diligently to develop its art further. It’s what the “Slobs” have to do for the offense to strike the necessary balance.“You have to develop that skill,” he said. “It’s something that, over time, you just have to continue to get better and that’s something that we can constantly work on.”Senior left tackle Taylor Decker agreed, adding that the Buckeyes can’t just run the ball “40 times” a game and expect to keep winning. Fixing the pass protection before Michigan State arrives in Columbus for its scheduled game against OSU on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. is imperative, Decker said.“It’s something we’ll have to work on,” he said. “Michigan State has some very good pass rushers.”Meyer is confident, though, that all the work the offensive line puts forth will pay off because of the talent the unit already possesses.“They’re good enough,” he said. “That’s the challenge I will have for our coaches. It’s not just them. We’re going to hammer (pass protection) hard this week.” read more

Ohio State sophomore guard JaQuan Lyle drives to the basketball against a Connecticut defender in a game on Dec. 10 at the Schottenstein Center. OSU won 64-60. Credit: Alexa Mavrogianis | Photo EditorThe year 2016 was a year the Ohio State men’s basketball team and coach Thad Matta would like to forget. The Buckeyes had the opportunity to turn the page on New Year’s Day in Champaign, Illinois, and start 2017 and Big Ten play on the right foot. However, the same head-scratching, disappointing outcomes seemed to have stuck with OSU into the new year. The Illinois Fighting Illini beat OSU, 75-70, dropping the Scarlet and Gray to 0-1 in conference play and 10-4 overall. Malcolm Hill led Illinois with 12 points in the team’s 11th win of the season, moving to 1-1 in the Big Ten, 11-4 overall. Tracy Abrams had 16.Sophomore guard JaQuan Lyle led the Buckeyes with 26 points on 10-of-18 shooting. He scored 18 of those points in the second half.Lyle scored 16 straight points for the Buckeyes over a span that lasted almost seven minutes to take OSU’s first lead at 58-57 in the second half since the 10:05 mark of the first half.Illinois guard Jalen Coleman-Lands hit a 3 with 3:28 remaining to retake the lead, 66-64. Down 69-67 with under a minute to go, Hill beat OSU junior forward Keita Bates-Diop to the rim, extending the Illini lead to four. After two Illinois free throws, senior forward Marc Loving knocked down a 3 to cut the deficit to three points. Once Abrams hit two free throws for the Fighting Illini to go up five, Loving’s off-balanced 3 was rebounded by the Illini, ending any hope OSU had for a comeback. OSU shot 42 percent from the field to Illinois’ 43 percent. Illinois forward Leron Black dominated the glass with 15 rebounds while OSU’s redshirt junior center Trevor Thompson struggled with foul trouble and ended the night with six points and four rebounds.Loving had 10 points.OSU’s next try for its first conference win of the 2016-17 season comes on Thursday against the No. 15 Purdue Boilermakers (12-3, 1-1 Big Ten). read more

OSU won, 3-0.Credit: Shelby Lum / Photo editorAndrew Lutz, redshirt-junior opposite for the Ohio State men’s volleyball team, picked up his second consecutive Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Offensive Player of the Week honor Jan. 28.Lutz said earning individual honors aren’t something he worries about, and just wants to help the team get better.“I don’t think much about it, I have teammates out there on the court doing just as much as me who aren’t getting recognized,” Lutz said.Despite Lutz’s modesty when discussing the honor, he is definitely an asset to the team as a whole, his teammates and coach agree.Junior outside hitter Michael Henchy said Lutz’s ability on the court is truly a sight to behold.“If you’ve never seen him hit, you’re missing out because he makes everyone else look like they have cement in their shoes,” Henchy said.Coach Pete Hanson explained the amount of responsibility that falls on the player in the opposite position. This particular player stands opposite of the setter, and is the front and back row attack option.Hanson said Lutz has impressed with how he has performed at the position“Andy has accepted that challenge, and has really done a nice job with it,” Hanson said.Overall, Lutz leads the MIVA with a 3.77 kills per set average and is third in the league with a 4.39 points average. Lutz has put together four-straight matches in double-digit kills, including a season-high 17 against MIVA rival Lindenwood this past weekend.Lutz’s teammates and coach describe him as a “pretty quiet guy” before matches.“He normally only says a couple of words to me and the other players,” Henchy said.Hanson referred to Lutz as a “quiet leader.”“He (Lutz) is not someone who talks a lot on or off the court, however, does try to lead by example and by his actions,” Hanson said.Peter Heinen, redshirt-junior setter, said Lutz is always listening to music up until game time, and has an interesting taste.“He could be listening to country one song and then switch it to European dance music next,” Heinen said.Next up for the Buckeyes, Lutz will be looking to continue his run of good form when they travel to Chicago to take on Loyola Saturday at 5 p.m. read more

Senior forward Brandon Kearney (25) celebrates his second goal with the rest of the men’s hockey team during the third period of Ohio State’s game against Wisconsin on Nov. 18. Ohio State won 4-0. Credit: Nick Hudak | For The LanternAfter seven straight wins, all in conference, the No. 2 Ohio State men’s hockey team (19-5-4, 12-3-3 Big Ten) will go up against Minnesota (11-14-4, 8-9-3 Big Ten) at home this weekend with an opportunity to lock up the No. 1 seed heading into the Big Ten tournament.Consistency has been key recently for Ohio State, as it has won each of the past seven games, placing the team firmly at No. 1 in the Big Ten and No. 2 in USCHO polls. Minnesota is ranked No. 4 in the Big Ten and currently remains unranked. With two wins against the Golden Gophers, the Buckeyes will clinch the Big Ten in the regular season with four games left on the schedule. The Buckeyes defense has been critical to the team’s success. Junior forward Carson Meyer emphasized the importance of both of their goaltenders: redshirt senior Sean Romeo and sophomore Tommy Nappier.“I think we play incredibly confident in front of each of them the same,” Meyer said. “They’re both doing unbelievable this year.” Where Ohio State sees its defense as one of its greatest assets, Minnesota has seen quite a bit less success this year: the Golden Gophers defense is ranked No. 42 in the nation. That said, the Golden Gophers are strong on the man advantage, with the No. 5 power play in the country and a 26.7 percent success rate.Head coach Steve Rohlik recognizes the significance of going up against a team that finds decent success in defending against power plays.“We’ve got to be good on the power play,” Rohlik said. “Hopefully we’ll get some opportunities, but you’ve got to make your own breaks, and we’ve got to prepare. We’re putting the work in this week, and hopefully we’re ready for it.”Minnesota is led by junior forward Rem Pitlick, who has tallied 17 goals, tied for No. 4 in the country, and 18 assists so far this season. The 35 points is tied for No. 7 in the NCAA.Senior forward Tyler Sheehy trails closely behind with 10 goals and 34 points, which is tied for ninth-most in the country. Both matches against Minnesota this season have resulted in 2-2 ties, with Ohio State winning in the 3-on-3 overtime in each game for two points in the Big Ten as opposed to Minnesota’s one in each matchup. Senior forward Brendon Kearney is hoping to put on a good game for the Ohio State fans to reward their support. The attendance at the Schottenstein Center has been more than 6,800 in the past four home games for the men’s hockey team, a number the Buckeyes reached only four times overall the previous season.“Buckeye Nation is always fantastic,” Kearney said. “For the past few weeks, we’ve been creeping on 10,000 fans a night for the past six or seven home games.” No. 2 Ohio State takes on Minnesota at the Schottenstein Center at 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday. read more
